At a Glance
- PHP2Shell flaws CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 saw millions of exploit attempts tied to the Potassium Mirai botnet variant.
- PHP reserved CVE-2026-115560, a third RCE flaw requiring unusual configuration, with no emergency patch planned.
- Node.js disclosed CVE-2026-111497, an out-of-bounds write in its bundled Brotli decoder, now found to affect Python packages too.
- Quest Diagnostics confirmed unauthorized access to its Quanum Lab Services Manager, exposing certain patient records.
- Capcom confirmed a breach of CAPCOM ID exposing 11.7 million account records and resetting 196 account passwords.
- A breach of P3 Global Intel exposed over 1.5 million Crime Stoppers tips, compromising anonymity for more than 850,000 tipsters.
Editorial Analysis
The picture around PHP2Shell remains unsettled. Millions of exploitation attempts have been recorded, including efforts to recruit compromised systems into the Potassium Mirai botnet, but CrowdStrike reports no successful exploitation in the wild or in its own honeypots. Its analysis suggests that turning the circulating crash-only proof-of-concept code into reliable remote code execution requires matching the target's PHP, container and application versions. CrowdStrike also identifies three underlying flaws across the two CVEs, complicating assumptions about the relationship between each advisory and the code defects involved. Separately, the PHP Foundation has reserved CVE-2026-115560 for another RCE vulnerability, but says exploitation requires an unlikely combination of configuration and application code. It has published mitigation guidance rather than an emergency fix.
Node2Shell highlights a less obvious dependency problem. Researchers demonstrated code execution against an unmodified Node.js 24.22.0 build using crafted compressed data, exploiting an out-of-bounds write in the bundled Brotli decoder. The same upstream decoder is used by Python packages Brotli and brotlicffi, yet neither is mapped to the CVE in advisory databases, meaning common dependency scanners may not flag affected installations. Applications can also load these packages indirectly through HTTP clients such as requests, httpx and aiohttp. As a result, developers may have a vulnerable component in their environment without explicitly importing it or knowing it is present.
Two breaches disclosed this week illustrate the very different consequences of exposing sensitive records. Quest Diagnostics confirmed unauthorised access to its Quanum Lab Services Manager affecting certain patient records, and said the incident was unrelated to PHP2Shell. Separately, a breach of P3 Global Intel, a tip-management platform used by Crime Stoppers programmes, exposed more than 1.5 million tips spanning 25 years. Over 850,000 reportedly contained personal information, including addresses and banking details associated with rewards. Toronto's Crime Stoppers chapter has suspended tip submissions because it can no longer guarantee the anonymity promised to people providing information. That loss of confidentiality affects the platform's core purpose, regardless of how the breach occurred.
Highlights of the Day
Mirai Variant Potassium Tied to First Confirmed PHP2Shell Compromise
Sophos corrected an earlier report of successful PHP2Shell exploitation to one confirmed compromise, alongside scanning and failed attempts. The successful attack delivered Potassium, an expanded Mirai botnet variant with DDoS and downloader functions, written to /tmp/nfs. Sophos says developing a working exploit has proven difficult even with AI support, and separately flagged a third PHP flaw, CVE-2026-115560, covered by existing PHP2Shell mitigations.
PHP2Shell Exploitation Faces Real Barriers
Analysis from CrowdStrike found no successful PHP2Shell exploitation in the wild or in its honeypots, despite widely circulating proof-of-concept code. Converting crash-only proofs into reliable remote code execution requires matching the exact PHP, container and application versions of a target, which the analysis calls a meaningful barrier. It identifies three distinct underlying flaws across the two CVEs, including a partial hash table insertion bug and two separate use-after-free conditions.
Node2Shell Brotli Flaw Spreads Beyond Node.js to Python and More
Node.js disclosed CVE-2026-111497, an out-of-bounds write in Google's Brotli decoder affecting versions 1.0.3 through 1.2.0, that lets a remote attacker corrupt memory via a crafted compressed stream. Python packages Brotli and brotlicffi carry the same vulnerable decoder and remain unmapped in advisory databases, so pip-audit and Dependabot do not yet flag them. The flaw also affects Bun, Envoy and Istio, while Apache and Nginx are unaffected because they do not decode Brotli by default.
Quest Diagnostics Takes Lab System Offline After Unauthorised Access
Quest Diagnostics paused its Quanum Lab Services Manager platform after discovering unauthorised access and believes some patient data was accessed. The system is used to place test orders and look up results, and several other systems were also paused during the investigation. Quest said the incident is unrelated to the recent PHP vulnerabilities and is working with law enforcement to assess the impact.
Crime Stoppers Chapter Halts Tips After P3 Platform Breach Exposes Identities
Toronto Crime Stoppers paused phone, website and app submissions after a breach of P3 Global Intel exposed over 1.5 million tips spanning 25 years. More than 850,000 contained personal information, including addresses, phone numbers and banking details tied to rewards. The breach occurred in March, and the organisation says it can no longer guarantee tipster anonymity.
